When will be Bratislava's optics for whole Slovakia?
Poor Bratislava and some of its politicians. What big sacrifice they had to bring when they had to submit, while approving a state budget for the year 2004, before degrading decision of the parliament to retire up to 200 millions of Slovak crowns for a development of under-kept regions and region self-governments. There are sources obtained within the frame of levies of natural monopoly (Slovenské Elektrárne - SPP / The Slovak Power Stations ) which show out the most of their outputs, so as profits, in the Slovak regions and not in Bratislava where they have their formal offices. Finance Minister Ivan Mikloš, who comes from east Slovakia from Vranov Nad Toplou, flatly declared in the TV that Bratislava will miss these money (!) and it will seriously destroy its (for the public still unknown) development… The initiator of the state budget change Ivan Šimko, who has started to formalise himself to the position of a solicitor of the region interests and who has adopted an argumentation of The Association of the cities and towns of Slovakia and regional self-government representatives said that it was very painful but fair decision. During a discussion with the fellow-travellers with an association of Slobodne forum / Free forum, actually said: My friends called me immediately after a ballot to ask me if it is true that I, as a citizen of Bratislava, have also voted for this change.
Instead of appreciation and happiness from the fact that some of the Bratislava citizens have at last understood what should create a good core of the fair regional politics and financial decentralization of the state, we were witness of schizophrenia : do the deputies, politics and parliament members of Bratislava who are paid from our, not only Bratislava's taxes, perceive Slovakia just as the city of Bratislava or as a state which has its citizens also out of this city? Did they sum up in them selves their attitudes and did they fix the mirror to their own sensibility of perception and acceptation of the citizens, living also in backward country, problems?
I'm sure I'm not alone who dislike the centralistic thinking and some form of existing socialism in the capital city. Effortless and somehow automatically the investments and job possibilities come to "Blava". Austrian and Czech republic neighbourhood allows the citizens of Bratislava to work out of their city and country, boasting flatulently with low unemployment rate. A lot of citizens of Bratislava (also naturalized), state officers, managers and politicians know Slovakia only from the maps. And if they go by accident to the country, they suffer the long roads and they behave as people who immediately discover America: wow, we have never noticed what we have here in Slovakia. In elections they vote for those who are not voted by the majority of Slovak people. And this majority than paradoxically suffer under the governing minority of Bratislava and every day observe how they are fed between themselves. Is the country more stupid than the capital city? Let's try to think about next questions. What did centralists of Bratislava offered and demonstrated till today? Shouldn't they serve as a sample of fair Slovak thinking and problems solution? What life, cultural and political quality do they present? Do they suffocate or develop the regions? How many of them are agreeable to come to live and to carry a business to regions, to the conditions which they have planned in the centre? Till when the people from regions will be the laboratory mice of that huge and inerrable Bratislava's politics and democracy which outrages the whole Slovakia and expels many Slovak citizens in abroad? I am convinced that people who live and create values in the regions don't have anything to shame of. On the contrary they can be a positive example. Indeed they earn less and they live in harder conditions than people in Bratislava but this is their advantage. Our state and its economic power viz. don't stand and don't fall for Bratislava. It is clear that after the entrance to EU the value of Slovak regions and their gradually independence of Bratislava will increase. Not all is about money and a brainwashing. People in regions are more human, tolerant, flexible, original, communicative, venturesome than lot of citizens from Bratislava. They are better prepared for the entrance to EU and they are the bases of next development of Slovakia. Use this chance.

We want to make public politics
´We don't either argue blindly and blankly for previous politics of HZDS (Movement for democratical Slovakia) nor we don't criticize politics of Dzurinda´s government. We came out with realistic, pragmatic opinion in which we deal with a sense and not with about who is against who but we deal with the question of effectiveness of achieved what each other in here and is enthusiastic for something," says Viliam Veteska, a vice-chairman of NR SR (National Council of Slovak Republic) and LS-HZDS (Public party - Movement for Democratic Slovakia). He has grown up without his father, who died, since he was 16. He says about himself, that everything, he has ever wanted, he had to work out very hard. When he was 20, he led rubber factory in Puchov. "I was always in the ambience of people who were 20 years older. When I wanted to keep up the step with them I had to be not only just skilful but also able to be ahead of their experiences. Today I am in the situation when I am coming to the seniors age. But my advantage is that I can discover young people and give them a chance. And disadvantage of elder people in my age is that they don't want to leave the positions for the younger ones in any way. It's selfish," says JUDr. Viliam Veteska (1953), current vice-chairman NR SR and LS-HZDS, previous successful businessman in the area of tourist trade, car racer, volleyball player, nowadays passionate hunter and nature glorifier.

Debrecin
It is the second largest city in the Hungarian Republic (211 000 citizens), administrative, economic and tourist centre of the South-east Hungary, the seat of the Hajdu-Bihar Self-governing Region, the crossroad of the Zatisie Region. In the 16th century it became the centre of the Hungarian reformation and of the Protestant movement, which spreaded throughout Hungary (note: "Hungary" in this text refers to the part of the former Austria-Hungary) in the 17th and 18th centuries. It is the former centre of the anti-Habsburg uprisings of the dukes of Sedmohrad (Š.Bočkay, G.Bethlen, J.Rákoczi, Fr.Rákoczi II.). It was the capital of Hungary and the seat of the National Assembly in the revolution year of 1849. Hungarian Parliament held its meeting in the biggest Protestant church in Hungury on 14th April 1849 and it declared the independence of Hungary from the Habsburg monarchy. The leader and the main ideologist of the Hungarian national revolution, which, however, did not bring national freedom to the rest of the nations of Hungary and it was defeated, was Lajos Kossuth. His predecessors were Slovak yeomen, aristocrats, who came from Turiec - village Kosuty. For example, his uncle Juraj Kosut was an eager supporter of Slovaks and of the Stur´s movement. L. Kossuth studied in Presov and as a 12-year old was confirmed at the evanjelic vicarage in Vysna Kamenica, a village 25 km from Kosice. In this church he made the promise of profession of faith.

Specialists in investment regional projects
Even if the company EUSK a.s., was established just at the end of August 2003, its experts have already been successful in skilled assistance at eleven investment project focused on a development of a tourist trade, village economics, infrastructure in gypsy settlements, reconstruction and construction of waterworks and drainage system in the region of eastern Slovakia. The total value of these projects financed from the funds of European Union overreached the sum of 58,4 millions Euros. At the moment we are working on a safekeeping project of pond sources in a basin of the river Torysa, says Ing. Andrea Valusova (1968), a Chairwoman of the Board of Directors and an Economic Director of an advisory - consultancy firm EUSK, a.s., which is specialized in delivering services in elaboration of the application forms for loan drawing, financing and the project implementation from supplementary funds of European Union. EUSK, a.s. (wants to help especially the project presenters from eastern Slovakia. Apart from a preparatory and realization phase they also offer experiences in dealings, negotiations and a lobbing in Brussels institutions.

Will the last Slovak wheeler find his adherent?
The story of Karol Smrek who has dedicated all his life to production of wheels and to work with wood. Today he is living with fear if the wheeler's guild won't disappear totally in a short time: ` The state should do more in its rescue, or we will totally lose it. And it would be a huge detriment. Even if it is very hard, it is also very beautiful and moreover extremely fragrantly handicraft. Any aroma cannot be compared with the aroma of wood.` `A handicraft has a golden bottom`, said our grandparents. Unfortunately, in Slovakia this hasn't been valid already for a long time. In this technical age there exist hundreds of ways to earn easier, faster and mainly more. But there are also fancier living between us who, in spite of various problems, haven't never hung the handicraft up. Such as these is the last wheeler, 76 years old, Karol Smrek from Stare Ludová.

It's beautiful to have a Slovak school
Since 15th December 2003 the Slovak school in Uzhorod finally got its legal personality. Even it was established 7 years ago till today it was a part of the Ukrainian 20th Elementary school. After gaining the legal personality it didn't leave the primal premises but present 7 classes with 96 total number of students became the bases for a new 21st Elementary school and at the same time first school in Uzhorod with Slovak language teaching. Kosice Rotarians helped to establish the library in Slovak school in Uzhorod with their present. After unexpected discovery they continue the collection also for other Ukrainian municipalities and cities where the Slovak language is taught. Department of Slovak philology at Uzhorod's National University also needs the help. Its beautiful to have the Slovak school. My father is Slovak and my son is also studying at this school. Signal of Slovak TV and of TV Markiza is not very good. These TV channels are possible to watch only at some places and we hear Slovak only at school, says Mariana Malcická, Vice-President of Ukrainian elementary school for Slovak classes.

Finally library

When at the beginning of December last year the school was visited by representatives of Kosice and Uzhorod Rotary Club and of Consulate General of SR in Uzhorod to hand in almost 400 Slovak books of different bestsellers and poetry to children they didn't suspect what surprise awaits for them at school. Apart from a small but very warm hearted culture program during which children of second and third class performed their knowledge of Slovak language, the Vice- President announce them the historical fact: Children, thanks to this present we will have finally our own library.

They don't have a phone

I took pictures of children, I observed their reactions, modest faces, warm and innocent smiles. I compared the environment in which they learn and communicate with 5 Slovak lecturers. They don't know a word in Ukrainian with children from Slovak and Ukrainian families they talk only in Slovak. In primary level apart from Ukrainian language they study all other subject in Slovak. In secondary level they study in Ukrainian also history and informatics, bilingually mathematics, physics and history. Other subjects are taught in Slovak language. Each visitor would see the same things as I did: lack of money which obstructs the school administration from building better toilets, dressing rooms, playgrounds, canteen or buying modern office furniture, school facilities, office supplies or simple blackboards with side wings. There is missing a telephone, hot water.... When listening to poetry of Ľudmila Podjavorinská I found myself in a class known by my grandparents or my parents. Episodes of Jakubisko film Tisícročná včela emerged in my mind and my brain was overflowed by stream of unanswered questions. In Slovakia we are cursing and crying over the level of our elementary educational system, its equipment, and the fact of paying of various things. We see children playing with mobile phones and some of them having everything what they dream of. And here in Uzhorod, in a city with 120 thousand inhabitants, only 2 kilometres from Slovak-Ukrainian boarder I see happiness and sincere joy only because of the fact that someone from Slovakia brought them books as some good and delayed Santa Claus. Some of them saw digital camera for the first time in their life.

Who is that Santa Claus?

During the lunch with teachers I have heard an interesting story. One of the Slovak lecturers who comes from Humenné has a very talented student in his class- he draws nicely. Each morning he wakes up at half past four in a shed, and together with his father who works in Uzhorod for a miserable salary, takes a train to come to the Slovak school. Every single day from Monday to Friday. When the day of Santa Claus was near he asked: Teacher, who is the Santa Claus ? He had never been at our home. My father doesn't make a lot of money. And his teacher who is happy that he has a job and that he makes little more money in Uzhorod than in Slovakia bought him from his salary some presents - school necessaries and crayons. We have talented children. All of them have learned Slovak. The most difficult period in the first class is the first half-year. We have children who have learned Slovak only at our school, declares M.Malcická. When I asked how Slovakia helps the school she refused to comment upon this question. She rather gave me the list of facilities with the request if we can help the school via international movement Rotary. It came out from the list that school urgently needs maps (night sky, earth hemispheres), toner to Xerox (type Canon NP 6112), students scope (12 pcs), drawing compasses, triangles, drawing papers, ink, ink pens, chalks, coloured pencils, coloured paper, balls for football, volleyball and basketball, computers, CD player...

Students of Slovak language are missing contemporary bestsellers

Slovak language is also taught in Uzhorod at Department of Slovak Philology at Uzhorod National University. There are 34 students within the five year master degree study of Slovak language. Their only one Slovak lecturer, Anita Krcová, told us that they are missing the works of Slovak writers from the between wars period and contemporary Slovak literature. We don't need much. We need only one book from each of the following writers: Hvorecky, Hevier, Bodnarova, Balaz, Sloboda, Jaros, Ballek, Mnacko or Pistanek.

Welcome in Las Vegas!
Once, mafia wonder of Nevada desert is unlimited city of hazard, bussiness, erotics and weddings. Two years ago 17 years old young man won two millions of dollars. He dropped in five dollar jetton and won one million. Teenager and also his parents almost got a heart attack. Tears of happiness and burst of laugh came after this. Casino servis started to pay more attention and its first question was directed to his age. American naivity? Honesty? Truth telling? He said that he'll be 18 in three weeks. The boss of security service and casino representatives shrug their shoulders. We are sorry...

Poland pushes Ukraine to Union
Since May 2004 the eastern Polish boarder as well as Slovak and Hungarian will become the new eastern boarder of European Union. The interest of Poland, EU and NATO is to keep and develop good neighbourhood relations with Ukraine, Byelorussia and Russia. This boarder which was in the past the symbol of totalitarian aggression (Russian-German pact before the world war II.) and of Europe division in Jalta in 1945 could and should be the boarder which will not separate but join and build peaceful and democratic Europe of neighbourhood nations. Ukrainians are at present divided into two equally strong camps. One of them supports the state integration within the Alliance of Independent States with Russia at its head and the second in European Union. American General Consul in Krakow invited Slovakia to do the same as Poland.

Thermal aqua park under the High Tatras
Slovak explorers looked for thermal water source under the High Tatras, but didn't expect that they would find so rich source of warm, mineral and healing water which flows under these mountains more than 15 000 years. It flows into a huge subterranean lake, 1600 metres under the earth's surface. Its core is situated under the city of Poprad and it's seventy kilometres long and thirty kilometres wide. There can be outflow from the spring up to 67 litres of 48 degrees water every minute. This water, and a possibility of its use for a tourist trade, ecological heating of the city of Poprad and energy production have joined together long-time friends who have created Slovak-British company Aquapark, Ltd., Poprad to create gradually a modern complex which consists of the aqua park, hotels net, medical, rehabilitation, sport and entertainment park under the High Tatras. It attracts mostly the British and more solvent clientele. A company Aquapark Poprad, Ltd., has donated to pupils of kindergartens, basic schools and secondary schools 1,2 millions for swimming training.

Crisis of political parties or crisis of party´s policies?
It is enough, if an oligarch, with interests opposing the interests of the party´s well-established oligarch, will get under the party´s protective wings, and it will cause reactions, which are similar to a natural phenomenon of unprecedented force and size. When during last summer, full of the temperature records, the forecasts about the even hotter autumn increased, majority of people interested in the political events imagened the forthcoming crisis as a conflict of political programs, opposing visions, conceptions and solutions, as a dramatic collision of opinions on the next direction of the Slovak economic and social life. The forecasts did not come true. A conflict arose, not one, but several of them. However, these were not collisions of the opposing opinions on the solution of issues concerning the whole society, but it was a conflict of interests of various power and economic groups behind the political parties.

What will be Slovakia in united Europe?
Are we in a position to retain national identity? History teaches us about that European nations, without an exception, came into existence by interactivity nation statehoods and Christian ecclesiastic organisation. Those were general square stones of Europe existence.

Milan S. Durica

In the reflection on this theme we must come out from attentive analyses of present experience. The ideal of the European nations and states unification began to concretize itself in post-war years by the contractual co-operation in production and distribution of primer energy stuff and industrial products, which played an important role in an international trade in first half of the twentieth century, as well as in a motivation of the World War II. This included especially coal, steel and atomic energy. From its beginning the goal was a new political and governmental system which would guarantee a security, economic development and basic liberties for all associated nations and states. Even though ideological fundators and people who realised first steps towards an achievement of this goal were Christian-catholic orientated politicians - Adenauer, Schuman and De Gasperi( about him has recently began a process of beatification), in their theoretical works is the expression "nation" understood in the sense of what we in Slovak call the state. This expression has this semantic refill in all west European states. In addition, after World War II. the psychological atmosphere in cultural world was that after defeating of national till chauvinistic oriented regime of Hitler's Germany and Mussolini's Italy the word "nation" got in our culture-ethnologic sense malignant painting. It became a social and political taboo.

The influence of Marxism

Victory of Allies coalition, of which the second strongest input was Stalin's soviet Russia, had its result not only in gradual integral merger of central and eastern Europe states to a geopolitical space of the Union of Soviet Socialistic Republics, but also in a monumental penetration of soviet ideology to the rest of the European states. For example in Italy the Communist Party was, till the near past, the second strongest political party. In another west states the Marxist movements were growing under the effective cultural and economic effect of ZSSR hidden by mixed socialism denominations. Non-governmental organisations, financed by the west, which obtained the sympathies of voters and gradually empower the main handles of state power, acquired the idea of the Europe unification. In final decisive phases they left there the significant part of Marxist, as well as Masonic therefore anti-Christian and anti-nation contents.

God resistance

Today, when the realisation of Europe unification is nearly certain, the result is that, and this we cannot mist it, in hundred thousands documents published by EU after the Maastricht contract isn't the expression "religion" found at all (nor substantially). It is regarded as a completely overcome sociable phenomenon which does not deserve any attention. Contemporary major resistance opposite the smallest reference to God and Christianism in elaborated project of EU Constitutional contract clearly confirms its anti-religious and especially contra-Christian character. History teaches us about that European nations, without an exception, came into existence by interactivity nation statehoods and Christian ecclesiastic organisation. Those were general square stones of Europe existence. Because of it after an expectable elimination of religions, and especially Christianism , this new European structure evidently follows another goal: similarly eliminate also the second pillar of the European bases, which have always been the nations . This is a significant content of permanent accentuating and stressing of the public character of new companies. In this tendency isn't any difference between soviet type atheistic Marxism and practical atheism of west consuming society. The bright testimony of this mutual ideological bearing is the fact that during the second half of last century so in communist republics of the east as well as in democratic republics of the west were the sections "religion" and "nationality" eliminated from identity personal documents. Many of us didn't even notice for example elimination of the red cross sign from hospital equipment, rescue cars, which has been already in alternated by some `old atheist ` symbol. Also the newest Christmas post stamp hasn't been already representing any sign of Christian context of the Jesus Christ birth.

National parties task

Because of this in the Christian as well as national configurations are rising serious worries of how's possible to retain these significant factors of the historical identity. The situation is getting more serious and grave because any nation nor state - nor the little one - practically can not avoid the entrance to EU without endangernment of own existence. It is about how to resist and retain the religious attributes and national identity in this new giant structure. This will be the one of the cardinal tasks of national parties in the united Europe. But for the successful managing of this tasks the national political parties in individual member states have to show such statistics of voting results which ensure them suitable strength in an attendance at performance of legislative and executive power. In this case a contemporary position of Slovak society shows up a hopeless situation. We are just five and half million of inhabitants and with the number of register political subjects we have exceeded also ten times bigger states. This is one of the pathological symptoms of our society. At the same time the national oriented parties and movements on political arena produce non-decisive minority. And in addition not only at interrelationships, but also in many cases there are more internal discordances in the same subjects , as fertile co-operation. We have three, or in fact from 28th November 2003, four political parties which have set in their names "Slovak national party". From the strongest political party in the past in Slovak Republic, HZDS now, in defiance of (or because of?) an extended name LS-HZDS, there are two groups of deputies which have been separated and which have founded another two political subjects.

We need a real unification

We are far away from, as a member state, being prepared to defend effectively our national interests and to retain our historical Christian identity. So it is the high time for responsible representatives of this political chaos to recover and make all the best for concentrating the `fuzzy` national forces. they should learn from the concrete example of our co-inhabitants of Hungarian nationality. While they were divided into three or four various political subjects they were unimportant element In the Slovak political course of events. But since they have got together and created the subject with ten and more %of suffragium they manage to underline the political development of Slovakia and to assert successfully all their program demands. Because of this I always recommend to my friends associated in seven political subjects, which report verbally to Slovak national and Christian program, but they show this just very slightly in their acts: the highest priority of your striven must be the unification outgoing from the scientific analyses of internal and international political situation, not a backstreet formal unification at any cost and dictated by one subject. For real unification of national oriented parties, has to be processed a simple but clear charter of main contents which will be accepted by all the subjects after the serious discussion as a obligatory base of common political tendencies and its concrete programs. But we have to have in minds that nor the most little social element doesn't have to and also cannot profess the same theories. The variosity of opinions to the secondary questions has to be not just allowable but also requested. Because exactly from this comes out the prolific discussion and finding of the best consensus. This charter hasn't been introduced to the public yet.

Sninske Rybniky and Biele kamene
One of the first two projects focused on progress of tourist trade in Slovakia, wich has been assisted by taxpayers of EU by means of fund Phare, is the project for erection of technical infrastructure in the area of Sninské Rybníky at the north-east of Slovakia near to Slovak-Polish and Slovak-Ucranian border line. This outskirts recreational area with three natural bathing pools and two breeding ponds is an entrance way to the national park Poloniny and it is well-known thanks to an excellent climatic parameters, convenient particularly for allergy and asthma treatments. There is the observatory with the biggest telescope with the reach of 1000 kilometres located in this area.

When will the story about the emancipation of genders end?
We do not fulfill the EU recommendations about the representation of women in decision-making processes. If we want to declare, that we are a country with a representative democracy, we will have to give women space to really participate in it. Slovakia passes the Europian legislation as well as the way of communication and management of the society. Europe gets closer to the aproximation of positions of women and men and we stand in awe of what we will have to accept in the area of equality of genders. At the first sight, everything is all right, our legislation does not permit discrimination of genders. But reality is different. Women earn one third less than men, their number in the top management positions, in the management of political parties and in decision-making processes in our country is very low.

Blood and wine at Grünwald
There is a small village - Grünwald in the Warmińsko - Mazowiecke Vojvodstvo (a region similar to "Shire" in Britain) in Poland. Every Pole knows its name. On 15 July 1410, one of the greatest Central Europian battles took place there. On one side, the german crusaders fought under the management of the Order of German (Teuton) Knights´ grand master Ulrich von Jungingen; on the other side, the united Polish-Lithvanian army of the king Vladislav II. Jagelovský with regiments of Czechs (Jan Žižka from Trocnov, who lost his eye in the battle, was among the Czech soldiers), Tartars, Moldavians and Russians. This battle, named by Poles as the battle at Grünwald, is named in the German history as the battle at Tannenberg, in the Lithvanian as the battle at Žalgiris... The defeat of the Order of German Knights meant that the united Polish-Lithvanian Kingdom, vast area from the Baltic to the Black Sea, became a serious rival and leading power of the Eastern Europe.

How did the Finish people change?
Structural changes in the Finish society were fast and definitely traumatic. During the last 30 years Finland has changed from an originally agricultural country to an urbanistic and highly modern society. Within these rapid changes, it is necessary to consider the regional identity as a part of the global culture. Fans of photography could recently see the exhibition of Finish photographers at the House of photography in Poprad. What are we as people; where do we move; what makes us move? Time and place leave imprints on portraits of people. It is also questionable, what values and experiences can be captured by the documentary photography. Through photography we can identify for a moment with life stories of people. We are allowed to read in small maps of individual lives, where the existence does not bring a message about great events or long journeys. There are prints in a small piece of any human fate, which we can share in our experience. I collected photographies of the selected Finish authors, which tell us stories about people´s lives. The pictures show, what the Finish people are like, but they also show the photographers´ view towards people and us.

Kaddafi junior did not rank among the stars
For a handsome fee he hired Diego Maradona from Argentina to improve his football technique. Ben Johnson, the Canadian doping prominent and a former sprinter, helped him to improve his shape. Who is Al - Saadi? Let me introduce the main actor a little. Al Saadi is 30 and he is one of the seven children of Muammar Kaddafi. He is his father´s successor and even now he is the head of one of the biggest companies in Libya and in Africa, the company Lafico (Libyan Arab Foreign Investment Company). Al Saadi graduated at the Academy of military engineering in Tripolis. And as it is appropriate for the son of the head of the country, he is not just an ordinary warrant officer, but he is a colonel. He, literally, loves football, he is an active player, he is the club owner and until September 2002 he was also the head of the Libyan Football Federation. What is he like in reality - is a question for more competent. Information vary: some tell about an arrogant and self-conceited son of a dictator; other tell about an elegant young man, who wears Versace suits, is disinguished, has business spirit, thinking of a young person from the West and speaks fluently several world languages.
