Merkel's hypocrisy towards Russia

German Chancellor Angela Merkel, who has ruled Germany for 15 years and who wants to finally retire in 2021, accused the Russian government of attempting to assassinate Alexei Navalny. Without presenting the evidence, she announced that after a visit to a German military laboratory at the Charité medical complex in Berlin. She referred to the laboratory's claim, which allegedly has "clear evidence" that Alexei Navalny was poisoned at the airport on August 20, 2020 in Tomsk. Who? We don't know the answer yet. Just as we do not know, in the case in 2017, when someone was allegedly supposed to "poison" Mr. Navalny in Barcelona. Therefore, we can only assume that the directors and actors of the "killing of Navalny" are probably intelligence services operating in Russia and against Russia. This 44-year-old controversial lawyer, businessman, financier, owner and director of two YouTube channels, a "fighter against corruption" and an unsuccessful leader of the so-called Russia's opposition to Vladimir Putin, who claimed to have more Ukrainian blood than Russian blood, is portrayed in the West, the EU and the United States as a "strong and influential dissident." He is reportedly said to be currently the only Russian opposition politician whose President Putin is mostly afraid of.

Mrs. Merkel commented on the alleged evidence to reporters as follows: "This raises serious questions that can and must be answered only by the Russian government." Nothing more. But her claim was immediately unequivocally supported by the United States, Britain, and NATO's comic chief, who demanded that Moscow would investigate the probable Navalny´s poisoning thoroughly and with full transparency and make those who had caused it take responsibility. The Russian government has vehemently denied the allegations, saying it was wrongly accused. They noted that the German authorities had not informed Moscow of their findings directly, but had first communicated with their Western allies. According to the Kremlin, the reaction of the West - a direct accusation of Russia denied Moscow the right to defend itself, or the right to due process. However, there is a presumption of innocence, diplomatic protocol and due process have been violated. And, of course, this was not the first time that the West had despised Russia in this way, trying to set international public opinion against Moscow and in favour of Mr. Navalny "abused and tortured by Moscow and endangering Putin."

The logic of judging the Navalny´s case says something else. The questions should be clearly answered by the German authorities and in particular by the Chancellor. They should explain their findings and back them up with verifiable evidence. Otherwise it amounts to hearsay and innuendo. Why? First, the Germans claim to have "clear evidence" that Alexei Navalny was poisoned by the newcomer. Their evidence allegedly comes from tests performed on his blood samples. However, a German military laboratory and doctors in Berlin did not provide Russia with any biomaterials to independently verify the alleged detection of the Novichok.

Secondly, the Russian doctors who first treated Navalny after he suddenly fell ill on a flight from the Siberian city of Tomsk to Moscow on August 20 have affirmed that they carried out comprehensive toxicology tests on his biological fluids and organs, and they detected no traces of toxins. Specifically, no traces of organophosphate nerve agents. The Russian medics concluded that Navalny may have become ill from a metabolic disorder, such as extremely low blood sugar. The Russian doctors who treated Navalny, and possibly saved his life by their quick intervention, said they detected the presence of cholinesterase inhibitors which affect the nervous system, but such substances can be caused by a wide range of clinical pharmaceuticals, including those used for the treatment of diabetes which Navalny reportedly suffers from.

Just for a brief explanation - cholinesterase is in the liver, pancreas, heart, in the serum and in the subcortex. Serum cholinesterase serves as an indicator of possible insecticide poisoning. It is measured as an indicator of liver function. Preoperative cholinesterase screening is used to detect patients with atypical forms of the enzyme to prevent prolonged respiratory arrest (apnea) caused by the slow elimination of muscle relaxants.

Let's get back to the point. Crucial to our thinking is that Russian toxicological tests did not detect any traces of Novichok or other nerve poison in the blood or tissues. According to available sources, Russian medics have the original samples having been taken from Mr. Navalny's body during his treatment at Tomsk Hospital. However, it is the Germans who claim to have discovered traces of Novichok in his blood on the fifth day after Navalny's transport to Berlin.

There are several questions that need to be answered. Why did Germany and Western states so strongly insist that Moscow agreed to the transfer of Navalny by plane to Berlin on August 22? Why did the Kremlin succumb to this pressure and allow this strange foreign intervention in its internal affairs? Out of respect for the three-hundred-year history of Charité, where Viktor Yushchenko, Yulia Timoshenko, Boris Yeltsin, Mikhail Gorbachev, Eduard Shevardnadze and Angela Merkel were once "treated"? If the Kremlin wanted to harm the Navalny by securing his killing with novices or other poisons, why would Moscow allow his transport to Berlin to detect toxicological tests and confirm his alleged poisoning? To convict itself? That scenario is illogical.

Navalny’s aides immediately claimed he was poisoned when he fell ill. They said he may have been poisoned from drinking tea at Tomsk airport before his flight. But CCTV footage shows Navalny being handed the drink by an aide. So, if anyone intended Navalny’s intoxication from the beverage, they wouldn’t have known he was to be the person who received the drink. Russian scientists, who invented the Novichok, clearly claim that if Navalny had drunk poisoned tea, he would have not fallen into a coma, but he would have most likely been dead. And so, would have his co-workers who were trying to rescue him during the flight. They would have been contaminated immediately.

We are witnessing another parody. Note the better timing in relation to several geopolitical factors. We will begin with an attempt to isolate the Trump administration from the UN on the issue of re-imposing sanctions on Iran. Russian, Chinese, British, French and German diplomats are working to save a nuclear deal with Iran despite American sabotage. The Navalny case can act as a "quick poison" for the diplomatic unity of the defenders of the nuclear agreement with Iran. Another factor is attempts to politically destabilize Belarus by supporting the self-proclaimed opposition leader Tikhanovskaya, who had significantly lost in the presidential election. It´s results were recognized by Russia and China. The US-EU goal is to disrupt relations between Russia and its neighbours.

A third factor – and this may be the most significant – is the Nord Stream 2 gas supply project from Russia to Germany. The $11 billion, 1,200-kilometer pipeline has been targeted intensely by the Trump administration for derailment. There are also pro-Washington politicians in the ruling German Christian Democrat party who have been persistent in their opposition to the ambitious boost to energy trade between Russia and Europe.

The New York Times headlined on September 3: “Navalny Poisoning Raises Pressure on Merkel to Cancel Russian Pipeline”. First, Mrs. Merkel was insisting that the Navalny case did not impinge on the Nord Stream 2 project’s completion. Be careful - the German military intelligence is claiming that Novichok was used to poison Navalny. But who allegedly used it? Mrs. Merkel's hypocrisy towards Russia has other dimensions. It is clear that she is under strong pressure from the United States, as Germany is still an occupied country. Trump does not want to back down on the pipeline, so she did not support US sanctions against companies that are involved or wanted to participate in the construction of the pipeline. However, she succumbed to the imposition of anti-Russian sanctions (under the auspices of the EU) for the alleged Russian annexation of the Crimean Republic and support for the war in Donbas. These sanctions were imposed in 2014 and are constantly being prolonged. And Mr. Navalny "miraculously" recovered and returned to Russia. When will we witness the third attempt to poison him?
